Geeta & Sita
India

Often in India, being born a girl is being born a second-class citizen. This was the case with Geeta and Sita. As twin girls, they were not what their father and mother wanted. A son was then born, but he died as an infant. Their father rejected Geeta, Sita, and their mother.

Soon, their mother’s parents forced her to marry again. But when another daughter was born, Geeta and Sita were again abandoned. The family of girls had to move back into their grandparents' home. They continued to be treated as a burden, lacking worth. The twins had to drop out of school to clean the house and care for their younger sister.

This is when Educate Girls stepped in. Educate Girls convinced Geeta and Sita's mother to allow them to attend a residential school in a nearby community. Their mother was skeptical at first but finally agreed. Educate Girls is paying both girls' tuition and boarding costs. The girls excel in their classes and both dream of being a teacher someday.
