  1. There are about 3.7 million children out of school, 60% of those children are girls, which means 1 in every 3 girls are going to school which is the steepest drop in school attendance in 16 years.

  2. The level of literacy for boys is at 66% while the level of literacy for girls is at 37%.

  3. Less than 20% of all teachers in Afghan are women, which may be a reason for the low enrollment for girls because some families don’t allow young, adolescent/soon-to-be adolescent girls to be taught by male teachers.

  4. Children that come from low-income homes are required to start working at school age. At least 25% of children between the ages 5 and 14 work for a living, which leads kids to stop going to school, according to the Human Rights Watch.

  5. Girls in places under Taliban control are stopped from going to school at all.

  6. Being a teacher pays about $100 per month and most of them don’t have adequate levels of training and education. It is also hard to supply resources with such a low salary.

  7. Being scared of natural disasters also prevents parents from wanting to send their children to school.
