There are about 3.7 million children out of school, 60% of those children are girls, which means 1 in every 3 girls are going to school which is the steepest drop in school attendance in 16 years.
The level of literacy for boys is at 66% while the level of literacy for girls is at 37%.
Less than 20% of all teachers in Afghan are women, which may be a reason for the low enrollment for girls because some families don’t allow young, adolescent/soon-to-be adolescent girls to be taught by male teachers.
Children that come from low-income homes are required to start working at school age. At least 25% of children between the ages 5 and 14 work for a living, which leads kids to stop going to school, according to the Human Rights Watch.
Girls in places under Taliban control are stopped from going to school at all.
Being a teacher pays about $100 per month and most of them don’t have adequate levels of training and education. It is also hard to supply resources with such a low salary.
Being scared of natural disasters also prevents parents from wanting to send their children to school.
